Shot taken at St. John’s Armenian Church in Southfield, Michigan.
I’ve gone to school in Southfield for five years and I knew nothing about this building till about two days ago. It’s tucked away around Northwestern and 9 Mile Road. All you can really see is a little bit of its roof and cross on top. You would never think something so beautiful could be in Southfield.
I took on a challenge with this shot. Its the first time I’ve used textures. I would like to deeply thank Terry Amstutz (aka Mobius Faith) for him spilling the beans on his thoughts about textures and its applications. I’m now starting to see things in a whole new dimension. I could of bought a book or took an expensive class, but Terry simply told me exactly what I needed to know in a short e-mail.
The texture is a combination of 2 closeups I took of an oil painting hanging in my place. Its funny how these textures were hanging all around me this whole time I wanted to learn!
My 2 year old laptop also crashed one time when trying to save this 600MB whopper TIFF file… it was a real computing workout!

Caldey Island Post Office, Wales. c 1950

Bild von sludgegulper
Charming post office, with the Cistercian monastery in the background. The Post office used to cancel the mail until well into the 1980s, perhaps the 1990s too. The Post Office also features on a page of the Island’s web site The Post Office still functions, and includes a museum about the island. It was built in 1913 around the same time as the monastery, and designed by John Coates Carter. At the time of the photo, the building also housed a general store. Monks first came to Caldey in the 6th century, the first abbot being Pyro. The Monastery was built in 1906 by Anglican Benedictines, who later converted to Roman Catholicism. However, in 1929 Cistercians arrived from Belgium to refound the community which had been abandoned in 1925 by the Benedictines and the monks live by farming, tourism and perfume manufacturing. They also issued their own postage stamps. Boat trips reach the island from Tenby during the summer months.
